Of course, I have been scouring craigslist since april to find a clean example of a 2002 and up Maz miater. Throughout the summer and winter, I have traveled long and far to find a miata that hasn't been used and abused by the current owners...

I found another miata and I was about to head out the door to look at it, until the "owner" emailed this to me:

The CarFax report has these inaccuracies in its report:

- It shows the car is an LS model, but it is actually Base model
- It shows that car was reported stolen in 03/05/2008. I had the car in 2008 already. It was NOT stolen, but it was broken into by a thief by cutting the vinyl top, which I had reported to the police. It got its top replaced by Robbins top as I wrote in the description of the ad. Somehow this event turned into "reported stolen" in CarFax.

- It shows in 03/22/2012 it was offered for sale by some Florida dealer. I have no idea how they came up with this one, it is completely wrong.

Wait what?!?!? I passed on this one, but that was just the beginning of working with sketchy sellers off of craigslist!

-July 2013: I went to see a NC, where the owner said that it was mechanically perfect...I drive in 90* weather and once on my test drive, the owner forgot to mentioned that the AC needs a recharge...REALLY!?!

-Another one was told it was rust free and of course as soon as I tapped my finger on the side rocker, rust particles rained down.... OH yeah it needs a ac recharge...ummm....thanks for wasting my time....oh and the kicker...after I explained to them that the car has dangerously worn brakes, a clutch that was slipping and the far from perfect body...they wouldn't go down 500 dollars.arghhhh

Kinja'd!!!

sorry this turned into a rant but I found this car in michigan today that was a shinsen with 78k for sale. I bit the bait and offered him the KBB for the car he has advertised goes for 7k in EXcellent condition (KBB said only 3% change of finding one in that condition)....

Kinja'd!!!

he said the lowest he will take is 9k cash and he wouldn't take 500 off the price to have it freight shipped here. he said that its the winter price...right..... :-|

Moral of the story...well seeing how the demand for the NBs and NCs for that matter are highly inflated...maybe I will just wait until 2015 or 16' for a ND...but i'm sure dealers are going to mark those up too

Miatas are really overpriced on craigslist here in NoVa... People think the damn leather interiors make them as nice as a Z4. I told a guy his miata wasn't reasonably priced and that I could get a BMW for less... He laughed at me and said good luck while I pulled up an ad for a BMW M roadster with less mileage for $750 less. Ahh craigslist assholes

Car buying is a battle of power. As the buyer, you just assert your power that you don't need to buy their car. So if they won't come down any, you just walk. I'm not sure how big your city is, but Miaters are plentiful.

Also, AC recharges are simple. Would you be willing to buy a cheaper one that needed a little fixing up? That's how I buy all of mine. You just gotta see the diamond behind the dirt.

I could put forth the initial investment to fix out a diamond in the rough, but the practical side of me says to put money to fix up my first car and keep it running (dodge stratus, gasp I know, but I like it for what it is) and save enough money to buy a trouble free car... IF only money grew on trees

Except that you could fix a rough diamond and sell it for a profit.

And just make sure the Stratus is good enough to sell.

Here's the problem...Miata's are worth more than blue book. KBB is a useless reference.

Unfortunately, people put high values on their Miata's. I've bought 3 very cheap. The key is just to wait for the deal to pop up, and be prepared to pounce. Try to come up with a specific list of questions you want answered before you show up. It won't help when a seller lies, but a lot of times if confronted with the 'Does the work?' question, they'll suddenly remember the problem they forgot to list in the ad...

Be honest with them and leave a phone number! 3 out of the 5 cars I looked at in person called me back and wanted to cut a deal, the 4th guy wanted to trade his Miata + $2k for my E90 328i (nice try buddy), and the last guy angrily called me back a week later and said "his wife wants it gone" so he would renegotiate.

People.

Never.

EVER.

EVER fall for that "A/C just needs a recharge" bit.

It's a sealed fucking system. If the A/C doesn't blow cold, it at least means there is a leak somewhere. That could mean needing a recharge every season, to every few minutes depending on the size. It could also mean a component has failed in the system. Anything from a pressure switch to a compressor. And when compressors shit, they like to send metal material down the lines, and if you don't flush and replace things, just slapping in a new compressor won't fix it for long Those metal bits will find their way back into the new compressor, fuxoring it up too. Lots of parts stores won't even warranty their compressors unless you flush line and replace the condenser, drier and valve.

Sorry, had to rant, sick of seeing "A/C needs a recharge" in so many ads.
